Program

DAY 1 – BIKE TOUR

Depart from Cusco at 7:30 a.m. by local bus to Puerto Málaga. From there, the bike tour begins. We’ll travel to Santa María. During this tour, we’ll see archaeological sites such as Huamanmarca and Inca Carcel, along with the ever-changing landscape. The 5-hour bike ride takes us through the impressive jungle canopy to appreciate native birds, medicinal plants, and exotic fruits such as mango, pineapple, papaya, avocado, coffee, and coca. You’ll be able to eat them and savor their delicious flavors. You’ll also see coca and coffee plantations and visit local families going about their daily routine. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2 – URUBAMBA RIVER – Q’ELLOMAYO – COCALMAYO

Breakfast at 6:00 a.m. We will then begin our walk along the banks of the Urubamba River. Along the way, we will see various varieties of fruit plants, wild animals, agriculture, and local medicinal plants with different functions that the locals use to cure their illnesses. After a two-hour hike, we will enter the original Inca Trail. It is the highest point, 1,758 meters above sea level, made of pure stone. From this point, you can see the Salkantay snow-capped mountain. Afterward, we will walk for two more hours to Q’ellomayo, where we will have lunch in a country restaurant. The trail then continues along the riverbank to the Cucalmayo hot springs. Before reaching them, we’ll pass a “oroya” (a small pond) used by the Cucalmayo farmers. We’ll have an hour and a half to reach the hot springs, then walk for another 45 minutes, or if you prefer, you can take a car (not included). The price is 2 soles, which may vary. Dinner and overnight stay in Santa Teresa.

DAY 3 – SANTA TERESA – MACHUPICCHU (AGUAS CALIENTES)

Breakfast at 6:30 a.m., then we’ll hike toward the river. From the riverside viewpoint, we’ll see the old town of Santa Teresa, which was destroyed by the El Niño phenomenon in 1998. We’ll then cross La Oroya to head toward the Colpani waterfall. If you wish, you can bathe in the waterfall, which is surrounded by fruit trees such as banana, mango, orange, cocoa, coca, coffee, and others. The trail is flat for another 5 hours. Along the way, you’ll see the mountains of San Miguel, Putucusi, and a visit to the Mandor waterfalls. This day, you’ll appreciate the silhouette of the impressive ruins of Machu Picchu. Lunch will be served by the hydroelectric power station. After lunch, we’ll continue to the town of Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes). Dinner and accommodation.

DAY 4 – MACHUPICCHU

On this day, you should get up very early, around 4:30 a.m., to hike up the stairs to Machu Picchu for an hour and a half, and to see the sunrise. Afterward, you’ll visit the most important sites, such as the Inti Watanabe, the Temple of the Condor, the Sacred Rock, and others. The guided tour lasts two hours, after which you’ll have free time to climb Huayna Picchu (admission not included), and more.
