Program
Maras
Located west of Cusco, at 3,300 meters above sea level, from here you can see the Urubamba mountain range and the snowy peaks of “La Verónica” (5,682 meters above sea level) and “Chikón” (5,530 meters above sea level). Its significant occupation began when the Cusco nobles of the Inka period were dispossessed of their palaces in Qosqo and forced to settle in other small towns like Maras. It has an adobe church, typical of village religious architecture, and paintings from the Cusco School are kept inside.
Moray
Located approximately 7 km southwest of Maras, it is a unique archaeological site of its kind in the region. These are gigantic natural depressions or holes in the ground surface that were used to build terraces or agricultural terraces with their respective irrigation canals. It is a prototype of a greenhouse or biological experimental station, quite advanced for its time, which helped ancient Americans inherit 60% of the plant products they consume, and Andean humans consume 1,500 different varieties of potatoes, 150 types of corn, and many other products.
3.- Salineras or “salt mines”
Located northwest of the town of Maras, these mines consist of approximately 3,000 small wells with an average area of about 5 square meters. During the dry season, they are filled or “watered” every three days with salt water emanating from a natural spring located at the top of the wells. As the water evaporates, the salt it contains gradually solidifies. The salt is then pounded and granulated. The salt is then bagged in plastic sacks and sent to the region’s markets. Today, this salt is iodized, making it safe for consumption. Finally, we will return to Cusco at approximately 3:30 p.m.
