Program
The Cusco Cathedral
We begin our tour by visiting the Cusco Cathedral, the Church of the Holy Family, and the Church of the Triumph.
Qoricancha
Next, we visited the Qoricancha temple, the pinnacle of Inca architecture and engineering. The Temple of the Sun, or Qoricancha, is also currently the Convent of Santo Domingo.
Sacsayhuamán
The impressive fortress of Sacsayhuamán is strategically built on a hill overlooking Cusco. It is famous for its enormous carved stones, some of which are 9 meters (30 feet) high and weigh more than 350 tons.
Q’enqo
Located four kilometers northeast of the city of Cusco, it comprises the archaeological sites of Q’enqo Grande and Q’enqo Chico.
Etymologically, it means labyrinth or zigzag. It served a purely religious function, and its exterior features a semicircular amphitheater with trapezoidal niches and a monolith that resembles a puma, measuring approximately six meters.
Puka Pukara
Puka Pukara means “red fortress,” because the limestone from which it is built has acquired the reddish color of the surrounding iron-rich terrain. It is believed to have served as a fortress for Tambomachay, an important palace during the Inca Empire. However, its architectural layout and the presence of fountains, aqueducts, and numerous enclosures also suggest it was a “tambo,” a communal lodging that offered shelter and food to travelers, as well as to the entourage that accompanied the Inca during his retreat to Tambomachay.
Tambomachay
Tambomachay, located about 8 km north of Cusco and very close to the ruins of Puka Pukara, is an archaeological site dedicated to water worship and as a resting place for the Inca ruler. This site is also known as the Inca Baths. It consists of a series of aqueducts, canals, and several waterfalls cascading over the rocks. The most striking feature is that the Incas created two secondary waterfalls from a single main waterfall, which are exactly the same size. That is, if you place two empty bottles, one at each waterfall, they will both fill up at the same time.
