Itinerary

Choquequirao is a lost city where the Incas took refuge starting in 1536. Located in the Vilcabamba Valley – La Convencion in the rainforest at 3,300 meters above sea level, this archaeological site is considered as important as Machu Picchu. The journey begins in the city of Cusco. After 145 kilometers of paved road and 10 kilometers of unpaved road, you reach the town of Cachora, where the 32-kilometer road begins. Surrounded by impressive landscapes, along the route we can also appreciate the flora and fauna of the Apurimac Canyon, the deepest in the world, until we reach the “Cradle of Gold” of the Incas.

Program

DAY 1 – CUSCO – CACHORA – CHIQUISPA

We depart from Cusco at 6:00 a.m. to reach the town of Cachora (3,100 m.a.s.l.) at approximately 10:00 a.m. Here we will meet the horses and muleteers, and it is at this point that we will begin our hike along a gently sloping trail. Along the way, we will have our first views of the snow-capped mountains of Padrayoc (5,482 m) and Wayna Cachora. Along the way, we will have a brief rest at the Capuliyoc Pass (2,900 m.a.s.l.), from which we will have a panoramic view of the Apurimac Valley. We will then descend, appreciating the beautiful landscape and warm climate, until we reach Chiquisqa (1,930 m.a.s.l.), where we will have our first camp. (Lunch and dinner).

DAY 2 – CHIQUISCA – ROSALINA BEACH – SUNCHUPATA

After breakfast (5:00 a.m.), we will continue our hike toward Rosalina Beach (1,550 m.a.s.l.), then climb the slope toward Santa Rosa (2,100 m.a.s.l.), where we will have lunch. This stretch is the most arduous. We then ascend to Maranpata (2,850 m.a.s.l.), which is a gentler climb. During this hike, you will be able to appreciate the entire hike from the first day and the vegetation that grows here. We will then hike a straight stretch toward Sunchupata, where we will have dinner and camp. From this point, it is an hour to Choquequirao. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

DAY 3 – SUNCHUPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO – CHIQUISQA

Very early after breakfast, we head to Choquequirao to appreciate the sunrise. We will visit the citadel for three hours, always accompanied by a guide, who will accurately explain this important Inca refuge and the importance of the Apurimac and Río Blanco rivers. We will also be able to appreciate the Vilcabamba mountain range. After the guided tour, we will begin the return trip to Sunchupata and descend to Santa Rosa, then descend to Rosalina Beach. Afterward, we will head to the town of Chiquisqa, where we will camp. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

DAY 4 – CHIQUISQA – CAPULIYOC – CACHORA

After a hearty breakfast in Chiquisqa (6:00 a.m.), we return along the same route until we reach the Capuliyoc Pass. From here, it’s another two hours to the town of Cachora. This is a much gentler stretch, arriving at approximately 12:00 p.m. Along the way, we’ll appreciate the exotic flora and fauna of the area, as well as views of the imposing snow-capped mountains and the impressive Apurimac Canyon. We then continue to the city of Cusco. We arrive at the hotel in the afternoon. End of our services.
